Hosting the evenings, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger Simon Bates plays with the featured artists every month. Simon originally launched the Loxwood Jazz Club to raise much needed funds to extend and improve his local village hall. The first night in December 2009 was a sell out and it continues to sell out most months. UK based and international professional musicians join Simon to provide a variety of highly entertaining evenings in our intimate hall. There is a licensed bar with real ale and the hall is set up in a relaxed way with candlelit tables to create a fantastic atmosphere. Hope to see you at one of our wonderful events.

Phil Mulford Band
David Sanborn Tribute

Alto saxophonist David Sanborn, who died in May 2024 has been described as the most influential funk, pop, R&B and crossover saxophonist of all time. His ground braking playing with his distinct and beautiful tone graces recordings by Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, The Eagles, James Brown, Elton John and the Rolling Stones to name but a few.

Leading the band at North Hall is a UK legend, top session Bass player Phil Mulford. He has worked with a dizzying array of artists including Lionel Ritchie, Beyonce, Annie Lennox and The Bee Gees as well as holding down the low end for the X-Factor and Britains’ Got Talent.

The band includes a who's who of the best funk musicians in the UK.

Pete Roth Quartet

The Pete Roth Quartet creates jazz for a new generation of music enthusiasts that look beyond the ordinary jazz conventions creating an unmissable experience that will leave a lasting impression. The quartet consists of Mike Pratt on bass, Simon Bates on saxophone and the legendary Bill Bruford on drums.

Guitarist and composer Pete Roth originates from Germany and has worked with artists as diverse as Brian Dee, Rosemary Squires and Maria Freedman.

Bassist Mike Pratt has appeared with many artists including Curiosity Killed the Cat, Acantha Lang, Dave O'Higgins and Liane Carroll.

Internationally known as a rock musician, drummer Bill Bruford also has impeccable jazz credentials, especially through his band Earthworks. He was voted into Modern Drummer magazine’s Hall of Fame (1990), named by Rolling Stone magazine as #16 Greatest Drummer of All Time (2016) and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of ‘Yes’ (2017).

Whether performing original compositions or re-imagining classics, the quartet consistently delivers a spellbinding performance in an unforgettable evening of musical brilliance.

Simon Bates Big Band

November wouldn’t be complete without another visit to Loxwood from the top UK musicians that make up the Simon Bates Big Band. Founded specifically for this club back in 2013 after requests from many of our regular audience members, Simon’s Big Band and its ever-expanding repertoire has been a regular feature in the Loxwood Jazz calendar ever since.
Expect a mix of the classic big bands of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich and Gordon Goodwin with some new arrangements and rarely performed music from British composers and arrangers. As ever, the all-star line-up comprises the best of British Jazz musicians including Loxwood favourites Chris Dean, Graham Russell, Michael Coates, Nick Beston, Bob McKay, Nick Mills, Sid Gauld and Harry Greene.

Always a very popular gig and the only way to start your final push towards Christmas, we’ve pulled out all the stops for this year’s Christmas Party. The lineup includes the incredible vocalist Miranda Wilford (Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Spice Fusion, Thriller Live), Trombonist Chris Dean (Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand), Harry The Piano (Sir Willard White, Julie Andrews, Elvis Costello, Andrea Bocelli) and drummer to the stars Elliott Henshaw (Shirley Bassey, Paul Anka, Michael Ball, Sheridan Smith, Phil Collins.)

Derek Nash Band

UK Jazz titan Derek has been a full time member of the Jools Holland R&B Orchestra since 2004 resulting in appearances with many music icons that have influenced the world from Amy Winehouse and Adele to Tom Jones and Paul McCartney. Derek has also appeared alongside soul legends Sam Moore, Martha Reeves, Ronnie Spector and he’s also shared a stage with instrumental giants David Sanborn, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. He also manages to run several bands including Sax Appeal, Protect the Beat, Picante and The Wonder of Stevie earning him a reputation as the hardest working man in the music business!

Simply Swing

A perennial favourite of the Loxwood Jazz calendar, Simply Swing has been at the heart of the UK entertainment scene for over 20 years. Playful and dramatic, cool and current, Simply Swing will take you on a musical journey with class, humour and virtuosity.

Led by pianist Sandra Lambert, the band features Jacqui Hicks on vocals, Simon Bates on Saxophone and Jeff Lardner on Drums.

Simon Bates Plays The Music Of Paul Desmond

Dave Brubeck’s smooth toned and tasteful saxophone player Paul Desmond was Charlie Parker’s favourite alto player and was called ‘one of true most creative figures in modern jazz’ by Down Beat. Simon and the rhythm section of Dave Warren on Guitar, Dominic Howles on Bass and Jeff Lardner on Drums faithfully recreate his mellifluous and gentle music interspersed with anecdotes about this most gifted musician.

John Etheridge Quartet

Virtuoso musician John Etheridge has been at the top of the jazz guitar world for over 50 years! In 1975 he joined Soft Machine and more or less simultaneously, joined the group of the celebrated jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. He has also worked alongside many famous musicians including Barney Kessel, Didier Lockwood, Birelli Lagrene, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Pat Metheny, Andy Summers, Nigel Kennedy, John Williams and the Zappatistas.

The band tonight contains one of the most gifted drummers in the world, Mike Bradley and bassist Rob Statham whose astounding technique and beautiful feel will have you enthralled.

Julian Stringle Quintet

British Jazz Awards winning jazz clarinet player, Julian Stringle made his TV debut with Acker Bilk aged 14. He leads ‘The Dream Band,’ a dynamic latin-influenced jazz-funk band who have released several albums. Julian has worked with a wide variety of artists including George Chisholm, Kenny Ball, Don Lusher, Cleo Laine & Sir John Dankworth, Digby Fairweather, Marc Almond, George Melly, Chas & Dave and the pop acts The Spice Girls, Meatloaf and Tina Turner. Julian has written over 30 TV jingles and documentary film scores and arranged and conducted a big band album for Charles Aznavour.

Sam Carelse's Gypsy Jazz

The finest Gypsy Jazz singer in the business, Sam has performed hundreds of shows, in venues such as The Grand, Ronnie Scott's and Brighton Dome, and at some of the UK’s most prestigious festivals including Love Supreme and Swanage Jazz Festival. As well as fronting her own bands such as the popular gypsy swing group Amuse Manouche, her professionalism, musicality and versatility means she is a go-to vocalist for many bands of all sizes and styles, including The Soultastics, Sour Cherries and the Les Paul Big Band.

The band also features virtuoso guitarist Jason Henson who has worked with such luminaries as Bobby Wellins, Jim Mullen and Alan Barnes.

Simon Bates Organ Trio

A fitting way to end our 2024-25 season - the Simon Bates Organ Trio featuring Pete Whittaker and Elliott Henshaw. The trio have been gaining a fair amount of attention and have performed at many of the UK's major jazz clubs over the past 12 months. The repertoire comes from the 1950s and 60s Blue Note era, with music from artists such as Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine and Lou Donaldson, and is guaranteed to get your feet tapping and your mouth smiling! Members of the band have worked with Kylie, Elvis Costello, Shirley Bassey and Phil Collins. With a pedigree like that, classy music is assured.

KINGS OF CLARINET

Loxwood Jazz host Simon Bates takes you on a journey of the first 100 years of the Clarinet in Jazz, starting with the pioneers Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet; through the swing era greats like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw; on to the be-bop of Buddy DeFranco and Eric Dolphy to contemporary players like Paquito D’Rivera and Eddie Daniels (pictured with Simon) and many more.
There will be rare appearances of the beast that is the Bass Clarinet and its tiny brother the Eb Clarinet alongside the standard Bb Clarinet. You might even hear Simon's famous Acker Bilk impression! As ever, this show features the best musicians British jazz has to offer backing Simon.

JULIAN BURDOCK’S
24 PESOS

Established in 2009, jazz-tinged blues band 24 Pesos have been nominated more than 10 times at the British Blues Awards and have released 5 critically acclaimed albums The Boogie Worm, Busted Broken & Blue, When the Ship Goes Down, Flesh & Bones and Do The Right Thing which won the blues and soul awards for most innovative blues album of 2016.
Songwriter and band leader Julian Burdock has written, performed and recorded with many renowned artists such as Beverley Knight, Jocelyn Brown, Dave Stewart (The Eurythmics), SEAL, Billy Paul, Ronnie Scott's Blues Explosion, Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley. The band’s current line- up features expert jazz musicians - saxophonist Simon Bates, bassist Nick Cohen and drummer Fabio Poian playing with a bluesy edge.

MICK HANSON
BILL MUDGE QUARTET

Mick Hanson is one of the UK’s leading exponents of jazz guitar. His unique style is a masterful fusion of his early blues roots with the honest swinging jazz of the 50’s and 60’s. Mick has worked with many of the worlds best known jazz performers including Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, Dick Morrissey, Brian Dee, Gordon Beck and Dave Newton, and recorded two critically acclaimed albums as a leader. The quartet features keyboard virtuoso Bill Mudge who works with many top UK jazz musicians including Vasilis Xenopulous and Nigel Price.

MIKE PIGGOTT’S
HOT CLUB BAND

Top jazz violinist Mike Piggott and his band present an entertaining evening of favourites from the music of the great Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, Joe Venuti and Stuff Smith alongside interpretations of American songbook composers including Cole Porter, Fats Waller and George Gershwin; with one or two unusual musical instruments to add a bit of spice! The quartet also features Nigel Kennedy’s guitarist Nils Solberg and bassist Peter Morgan.

THE DRAWTONES

Ronnie Scott's regulars, The Drawtones, create a warm and engaging atmosphere. Featuring seasoned jazz artists, they also nurture and spotlight new and young talent in the band. Relaxed and groovy, bluesy and funky, the sax /guitar /organ combination gives them access to the hippest tunes from the '50s and '60s jazz era, to the dance floor iconic instrumentals of the '70s and '80s. They adapt to the room and crowd, entertaining without imposing, building energetic improvisations whilst delivering the goods of the coolest and most recognisable tunes of the genre. Led by keyboard supremo Rod Pooley, the band features Andy Williams on Guitar, Simon Bates on Saxophone, Daniel Dotor on Bass and Jessica Dann on Drums.

ALAN BARNES QUINTET

Multi award winning reeds player Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that has few peers. His formidable technique, versatility and brilliance have made him a first call for studio sessions and live work throughout the UK.
Alan's unique musicianship, indefatigable touring, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz.

ELLIOTT HENSHAW BAND

Drummer, Composer and Musical Director Elliott Henshaw has worked with many well known artists and bands including Shirley Bassey, Paul Anka, Michael Ball, Jane McDonald, Sheridan Smith, David Benoit, Russell Watson, Tony Hadley, The BBC Big Band, The Drifters, Gwen Dickie, Georgie Fame, Bob Mintzer, Mike Stern, Eric Marienthal, Beverley Knight and Phil Collins. He is currently the musical director and drummer for both Tony Christie and Leo Sayer and has performed on over 50 albums and recorded music for various film and TV shows. He also has played on over 20 West End shows and runs the 18 piece big band Spice Fusion!

HARRY & SIMON QUARTET

They’re back! The incredible pairing of woodwind virtuoso Simon Bates and piano supremo Harry The Piano with the addition of bass and drums. Harry has been at sea entertaining the well to do on the finest cruise ships for the best part of two years, so it’s good to finally get him performing on dry land. Expect the usual fireworks combining jazz standards and cabaret favourites – come prepared with some requests and discover some familiar tunes played in not so familiar ways!

GRAHAM RUSSELL SEXTET

The Graham Russell Sextet is a six-piece jazz unit comprising of trumpet, saxophone, trombone, piano, bass and drums. Their repertoire is mainly jazz standards with some interesting and challenging arrangements by top
US trumpeter Bobby Shew. Bandleader and trumpeter Graham Russell, has worked with Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis TCB band and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; other members have worked with artists including Jamie Cullum, Jools Holland and Elvis Costello.
